- 2If it is safe and you still have any control, pull as far left as you can — onto the verge, a layby or a slip road, well away from live lanes.
- 3Get everyone out of the vehicle and behind the barrier or up the verge, away from moving traffic. Leave through the doors on the side furthest from the road if you can.
- 4Never stand between your car and oncoming traffic, and do not attempt repairs at the roadside on a fast dual carriageway.
- 5Keep pets in the car — a frightened animal loose near a busy road is a danger to everyone.

The A90 is the big dual carriageway that carries you north out of Dundee towards Aberdeen, sweeping past Forfar and Brechin and climbing on towards the Stonehaven approach. It is a busy, high-speed road with long stretches where there is no proper hard shoulder — so a flat tyre, a dead battery or a warning light coming on can leave you in an exposed and awkward spot with traffic passing close by at speed.
